"All For One, One For All"

Alexandre Dumas’ The Three Musketeers is one of my favorite classic novel. It is so well-written, the words reflected the romantic and timeless era of 18th century France. The main characters, d’Artagnan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis, are so lovable with their conflicting values and characters but shared one of the greatest friendship and adventures in literature. And I like the fact that the main antagonist of the story was a headstrong woman, Milady. Her tragic love story with Athos was just brilliant. Cardinal Richelieu as the master of intrigue was an engaging antagonist, masterminding the fiasco of the diamond tags of Anne of Austria that the four musketeers set to retrieve in England.

It was only fitting for such wonderful masterpiece to be shown on the silver screen. It was the next chapter of the musketeers’ life that was shown in the movie ‘The Man in the Iron Mask’. It was not the exact story in the book but that was really necessary. The man in the iron mask was just an incidental character in the book while it is an important part in the movie. And definitely, d’Artagnan was not the father of the King in the original story unlike in the movie. I think the revisions were just fine as it added the drama in the motion picture.

Leonardo Di Caprio as the king and his unfortunate jailed brother was simply awesome. At one time he was the cruel and heartless Louis XIV, the proud King of France. Then he suddenly becomes the innocent and meek concealed twin brother, stripped from all the privileges of claiming his equal right as a monarchy. The depth of his acting was just perfection. One can see him as the threatened king and as the same time, the righteous replacement that can lead his kingdom better.
