I think that I made the best choice possible when I voted last May 10 for the national and local election. It had been a tedious and serious thought process before I finally came up with my decision.
New and Old Clowns Coming Through
I made my list of candidates the night before the big day. I already made up my mind about the twelve senators that I will vote. But I was shocked and disappointed that only two of my choices were included in the magic 12. Name recall had played a big part as TRAPOs (traditional politicians) and celebrities are winning the senatorial race. With these new members, the Senate has no chance to redeem it’s integrity and will just continue to be what already it is, a circus. It is there for people’s entertainment rather than public service. What it will lack is the new blood that should have champion the causes of the masses. This is the price of democracy that I enjoy; I have to respect the decision of the majority, even though I gravely disagree with them. I would love to be proven wrong. I hope the Senate will regain it’s lost glory by passing bills which will pave the way for our nation’s progress and uplift the qualities of life for ALL Filipinos.
Scrap the Surveys
Noynoy Aquino was not my first choice to vote as the President. He was in the oblivion until the whole country mourned his mother’s death. It was like his political party got the perfect opportunity to take advantage with the outpouring of grief of the people. Having a martyr father and saint of democracy mother was a big advantage for him. He really doesn’t have his own merit aside from the brief time that he served as Senator and local politician in Tarlac. He did not have that big impact in helping his constituents or changing their lives for the better. But I voted for him anyway.
Dick Gordon was my first choice. In my sample ballot, it was the oval beside his name that was shaded. What I remember about him the most was his excellent administration in the SBMA. I can still recall how furious he was when then president Estrada kicked him out from the office. I think that was not because he will be out of power. It only showed how passionate he was in his job, that he worked with blood and sweat to get things right and he is someone who is brave enough to fight for his principles. But in the dawn of the Election Day, I just knew that he would not be the wise choice.
Gordon would not be the best choice because I know that his time is yet to come. I think that he should work much harder in the Senate to prove that he is worthy to claim the highest position in the land. That is why he doesn’t like the surveys. He doesn’t like to know that he is not yet ready for the presidency. Though he also made a good point, for the next election, surveys should be scrapped because it is not impossible to influence the opinion of the electorate who are the winnable candidates.
Make Your Own Legacy
I am sure that I made the right decision of voting Aquino simply because I trust him. I believe that as a good role model, he can minimize and all together get rid of graft and corruption, bureaucracy, red tape in our government. I know that with his strong leadership he will champion education, economy and peace and order, especially in Mindanao. His parents’ surname might help him win the election, but it can no longer aid him to be a good president. It is really not about his destiny or birthright. The people trusted him; I think he can’t live with his conscience if he will betray that. He was given a chance; now he has to show his leadership, abilities and intellect to turn around the fate of our nation. He will be set to make his OWN legacy.
